SITUATION Absolute Beach Man Rubble, October 2 – December 15, 2013.  Whitechapel Gallery.

‘Hidden behind a wall of larger than life images of the head of a penis, there is another tiny exhibition within an exhibition. A series of recent photos of Lucas hung without adornment in a functional corridor; creating a separate space, occupying a non-place, behind the riot of sex, colour, and aggression evident elsewhere. Here, the only thing to see is the artist herself. She is relaxed, at ease, happy. With no pretence, they are candid snapshots of the artist as a person.

So why are they there?

/ read why

And this is why the photos of Lucas, the photos of Lucas as she is now, are hanging hidden behind the main body of the show; and probably why this is her first retrospective. She is acknowledging the past and the popularity of her pieces but wants to show that she has moved on. Sure, she is saying, enjoy the past, but I am still here, still working: the world has changed, I have changed. This show is a blending of the definite past and the more tentative present; whether successful or not is uncertain. It’s a dual layered affair and it is quite possible, with a shift of visual perspective, to see two exhibitions in the one space. But throughout it all is Lucas, her photos, and the promise that more is to come.’ Lisa Donovan.
